The Music of Alban Berg – ONLINE (may be taken for credit or as a noncredit institute)
This class focuses on analysis of the music of Alban Berg. The approach combines the George Perle-inspired approach to rhythm, pitch and form from Professor Dave Headlam’s book (The Music of Alban Berg) with the motivic and aesthetic approach of Theodor W. Adorno. In addition to an overview of music from three periods in Berg’s oeuvre, the course will also include Berg’s writings and context from the music and writings of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. The relevant theory will be presented along the way to provide a framework for the analytical approach.
