Eastman Summer Music Teachers Institute
General Information

DescriptionSpend a week with Eastman’s Music Teaching and Learning faculty, refreshing your musicianship skills, celebrating multiple musical styles and traditions, and preparing for the next school year. One hour each day will be devoted to special topics tailored to participants’ background.
Daily sessions will include:
- Musicianship for Teachers: This portion of the institute is devoted to reviewing and refreshing musicianship skills necessary to engage students in standards-based instruction. Nurturing these skills will help teachers teach a variety of repertoire, including music they choose to teach, and music students bring to the classroom. We will prioritize functional keyboard and harmonic instruments with an emphasis on active music-making.
- Celebrating Musical Styles and Traditions: The Tanglewood Symposium declared, “Musics of all periods, styles, forms, and cultures should belong in the curriculum,” and we will enthusiastically explore how. This summer, we will be celebrating the intersection of K-pop and the Korean Percussion Ensemble!
- Teaching Young Children: Whether you never thought you’d teach young children or always planned to, this class supports you in cultivating joyful music environments where you and your learners can thrive. With a focus on PK–2, we will explore playful, responsive, and developmentally grounded approaches that can apply across music settings.
- Vocal Basics for All Music Teachers: All music educators have opportunities to use their singing voice as an instructional tool. Learn to sing with confidence and to empower your students to sing in healthy, artful ways.
- Instrumental Applications will be included, based on participant background.
