Program Information

Addressing the needs of today’s collegiate and advanced high school players, the Eastman Summer Trumpet Institute is a fun-filled, highly motivating five-day experience hosted by Wesley Nance (Second Trumpet, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; Faculty, Eastman School of Music) and Anthony Plog (internationally known trumpet pedagogue and composer). The institute will feature daily topical sessions such as warm-ups, practice strategies, techniques, and interpretation, and consist of two tracks, high school and college. Students will:

  • Participate in masterclasses with faculty critique and group discussion.
  • Rehearse and perform in collaboration with a professional pianist.
  • Participate in college (high school track) or orchestral/military band (college track) mock auditions and get feedback from faculty.
  • Explore ways to develop successful mental attitudes, styles, and techniques for great recital performances, orchestral playing, and audition success.
  • Orchestra repertoire sectionals (college track)
  • Perform a capstone concert as solo with piano and trumpet ensemble.

Join us as we explore the challenges and excitement of playing this fantastic instrument. This is also a great opportunity to work with Eastman faculty and explore the campus if you are interested in attending ESM for undergraduate or graduate studies. All applicants will be required to submit an audition video, enrollment is limited to 8 high school track and 4 college track students.

The institute opens with a Faculty Concert on Sunday, July 27th at 7:30 PM in Kilbourn Hall, followed by an Orientation meeting in Ray Wright Room Guest Faculty Concert: on Wednesday, July 30th at 3:30 PM in Kilbourn Hall
