Eastman Summer Trumpet Institute: Orchestra and Military Band Audition Intensive
July 29-August 2, 2024 / Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. plus some evenings
Room: ESM 404

Faculty: Wesley Nance and Andrew McCandless
Guest faculty: Christopher Sala, US Navy Band; Kristopher Westrich, Assistant Principal Trumpet, Concert Band & The United States Air Force Band; Steven Franklin, Principal Trumpet, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
Guest masterclass: Jennifer Marotta, USC Thornton School of Music

The Eastman Summer Trumpet Institute: Orchestra and Military Band Audition Intensive is a one-of-a-kind five-day experience hosted by Wesley Nance (Acting Principal Trumpet, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; Eastman trumpet and brass chamber music faculty) and Andrew McCandless (Eastman Professor of Trumpet; Principal Trumpet of the Toronto Symphony). Students will participate in daily masterclasses with faculty and guest artists, playing critique, and group discussion, with an exclusive focus on audition preparation and execution. Daily sessions include warm-up, practice strategies, technique, interpretation, performance science, and execution. The week will culminate with mock orchestra and military band auditions, with students playing for a panel made up of orchestral and military band professionals. The auditions will be run as close to real auditions as possible, and all students will participate in both auditions. Each student will then be given individual feedback, not just on those particular audition rounds, but their playing and preparation in general as it compares to the standard needed to win an audition.
