Summer Private Lessons (Community)

Summertime is the perfect time to begin and Eastman is the right place for you!

The core of all serious music study consists of private lessons on your instrument, voice, composition or jazz improvisation. At Eastman Community Music School, we have students of all ages and all levels from beginner to advanced.

Private lessons involve working one-on-one with a teacher, typically on a weekly basis. Lessons can be done either in person or virtually. To register for private lessons, complete a registration form and submit it online by July 1.

Indicate voice or the instrument you wish to study. If you have a preference, you may request a specific teacher or simply indicate “Instructor” (the teachers with extensive experience) or “Intern” (grad students at Eastman School of Music). Please indicate as many available times as possible.

Click here for all our private lesson offerings and clickable bios for each instructor or intern. Not all instructors and interns are available to teach during the summer, but the ECMS office strives to connect students with teachers that match their preferences and availability. It is up to the teacher and student to decide how many times during the Summer Session they are able to meet.

All Summer@ Eastman participants must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus (2nd dose of Pfizer, Moderna or 1st dose of J&J/Janssen vaccines). As of April 6, 2022, booster shots are no longer required. Students must submit a scanned copy of their COVID-19 vaccine card which includes the following information: name, date of birth, vaccine manufacturer, lot number, and date each dose was given. We do plan to allow for limited medical exemptions; anyone interested in this option should contact academicaffairs@esm.rochester.edu for instructions.

Masking is strongly encouraged, but not required, for those who are fully vaccinated. People who have received vaccine exemptions must continue to wear a mask in accordance with University of Rochester and New York State policies. Woodwind or brass musicians who are not fully vaccinated are expected to cut a small slit in their mask to allow for their mouthpiece, but this slit must be modest so that the majority of the mask is left intact. The sides of the mouth and chin must remain covered by the mask at all times. Bell covers must also be used.

COVID-19 safety policies and protocols are subject to change; we will update this page as new information is received.
