Enhance your performance skills through FUNdamentals. Solidify your craft to liberate and exalt your artistry on the horn. The institute includes private and group lessons, master classes, solo playing, quartet performances, and horn ensemble playing.

The institute is open to high school, collegiate, and adult musicians.

Orientation: Sunday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. in Karen Rettner Community Music Center (MSH 1)
Faculty Concert: Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall
Participant Concert 1: Friday, August 7 at 3:00 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall
Participant Concert 2: Friday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall


Housing and meals are not included in course tuition. On-campus student housing at the Eastman Student Living Center is available for an additional fee of $84/night, which includes 3 meals daily in the Dining Center. Participants staying off-campus may also purchase individual meals at the Dining Center. Information about housing and area hotels can be found here.

Collegiate students and adults: No audition is required, but admittance is contingent upon review of your résumé and references. To apply, please send a current copy of your résumé (including names and contact information for two references) to the Summer@Eastman office. You may email your résumé to us at: summer@esm.rochester.edu or upload it to Summer@Eastman’s secure online dropbox. You do not need to submit an audition form or provide letters of recommendation. We will contact you when your résumé has been reviewed.

Application deadline: Please send your résumé and references for review by May 1, 2020 (new deadline).
Final deadline: Upon acceptance, full registration and payment must be received by May 15, 2020.

High school students: Admittance is by audition only. Click on the link at the bottom of this page to use our online Audition Form. Please submit your audition to the Summer@Eastman office by May 1, 2020 (new deadline).

Auditions should include:

  • A current copy of your music résumé, including names and contact information for two references
  • Audition Recording:
    • One of the following etudes: Maxime Alphonse Book 3,  #1 or #9; Kopprasch #21, #22 or #46 (no need to include repeats in your recording)
    • Exposition of first movement (no accompaniment) for Mozart 2, 3, or 4

Audition Video Instructions:

All applicants must submit separate video links for each piece on the audition list.

All videos must conform to the following format:

  • Camera facing directly at the applicant (no side-facing videos)
  • Camera 5-15 feet from student, clearly showing you and your instrument
  • Uploaded to YouTube for ease of transmitting (unlisted link suggested; public links okay; private links don’t work)

Please send video links together in one Word document as shown in the example template below (do not forward individual videos to the Summer@Eastman office). Links should be “active” so that videos can be viewed directly from your document; you may wish to test this before submitting your audition.

There is no fee to audition for this institute. Audition results will be announced after the May 1 deadline.
