Jazz Improvisation for Classical Pianists
July 15-19, 2024 / Monday-Friday 9 a.m-4:00 p.m.
Rooms: ESM 443, ESM 404

Dariusz Terefenko

This institute is a great opportunity for classical pianists to learn how to perform with a jazz group, realize a jazz lead sheet, improvise on a blues/standard tune, or accompany a jazz singer. During the week, we will discuss the principles of jazz improvisation and immediately apply them to practice in a variety of live performance settings: jazz combos and jazz duos (accompanying singers/instrumentalists).

A typical day will have the following:

9-10:30 a.m.     Group Masterclass
11 a.m.-12 p.m.     Jazz Improvisation
1-2 p.m.     Jazz Solo Piano
2:30-4 p.m.     Jazz Accompaniment
TBA     Individual lessons (each participant will receive 1 private lesson)

Evening Activities (7-9 p.m.):

Monday     Faculty Recital (Terefenko)
Tuesday     Jam Session
Wednesday     Jam Session
Thursday     Jam Session
Friday     Participant Showcase Performance

Participants will perform in a group concert at the end of the week with invited jazz musicians (solo, duos, trios).
This institute welcomes all intermediate and advanced pianists. No previous jazz experience is required.
